The term monsoon is sometimes used to mean “heavy rain,” but scientifically it refers to a seasonal reversal in wind direction. In many regions, the reversal is linked to differences in how land and ocean surfaces heat and cool. Land tends to warm more quickly than water during summer, creating lower air pressure over land and drawing moist air inland.

As moist air rises, it cools, and water vapor condenses into clouds and precipitation. This is why monsoon seasons can bring intense rainfall. However, rainfall patterns vary by region and by year.
